Talking Movies: Oxford
In 2017 I wondered why it was that there were social gatherings for avid readers (book clubs), and art fans (ie: gallery/exhibition openings)...But not really an equivalent for filmgoers. A place where fans could relax over a drink,and talk about that obscure 50s Polish film they loved, that cult 70s movie, or how that new Blockbuster was so overrated. From deep discussion to casual chat, there wasn't a platform.

Therefore Talking Movies: Oxford was born, a monthly event that sees film fans of different backgrounds come together to share what they loved, hated, would recommend. I spent the first event hoping at least 4 people would turn up...Now there are over 1500 registered members with about 150 being active (engaging with the website, attending, RSVP-ing) at any given time.

The Aims of Talking Movies: Oxford
To bring together film fans (regardless of age and background) to engage with others, make friends, and share their love of film, over a nice relaxing drink (or two!).
Promote Filmgoing
We encourage members to see films as intended...At the cinema. As such every event page that's setup showcases a wide variety of releases for that month. From time to time we run filmgoing events to anticipated releases or special Q&A events. By supporting cinema we hope to give a much needed shot in the arm to an industry that has had a tough few years.
Critical Conversation, Casual Setting
Whether a die-hard film fan or casual cinemagoer, Talking Movies provides a social, educational gateway into which people can explore the wider themes of films. From theory to feminism, to pondering questions such as 'what is the appeal of horror?', and why does everyone 'love' a bad movie. Whether it's mainstream or art house TM provides a platform for a variety of people to all express their opinion on film no matter how deep or instinctive.
Provide An Online Hub
Our group is hosted on Meetup.com which allows attendees to join, RSVP to our events and connect with other members via bulletin board chats, and comments. Users can also review our events, giving us an average of 4.7/5 rating
